Steel vs Aluminum Truck Cargo Bodies: Weight, Strength, Corrosion and Cost

Truck cargo body side panels in production

Most cargo bodies can be built in steel or in aluminum, and the choice affects the truck for its whole working life. It changes how much the truck can legally carry, how the body stands up to rough loading and weather, how it is repaired and what it costs. Qingdao Hailong Machinery Group builds stake and van bodies in steel or aluminum configurations. This guide compares the two materials and explains how to decide.

Weight and payload

Aluminum has roughly one third of the density of steel. Even though aluminum parts need thicker sections to reach similar stiffness, an aluminum body is usually noticeably lighter than a steel body of the same size. Where the gross vehicle weight is limited by law, every kilogram saved on the body can be carried as payload. For operators who run full loads every day, that extra payload can matter more than the higher purchase price.

Strength and resistance to damage

Steel is stronger and stiffer for the same thickness and is more forgiving of impact. Bodies that are loaded with excavators, forklifts or cranes, or that carry heavy, sharp or abrasive cargo, often favor steel floors and structures. Aluminum is tough enough for many general cargo and van applications, but dents and wear more easily under hard use. Mixed designs are also common, for example a steel frame and floor with lighter side panels.

Corrosion

Aluminum forms a thin oxide layer that protects it from ordinary rusting, which helps in wet climates and on salted roads. Steel needs a protective coating system. At Hailong, steel cargo bodies are fully e-coated and then finished with high-temperature baking paint. E-coating reaches seams, corners and the inside of profiles, where corrosion on steel bodies usually starts. Where aluminum and steel parts touch, they should be isolated to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Repair and service

Steel bodies can be straightened and welded in almost any workshop, which matters in markets where trucks work far from service networks. Aluminum repairs need suitable welding equipment and trained welders, and damaged profiles are often replaced rather than straightened. Spare panels and boards help keep downtime short for either material.

Cost

An aluminum body usually costs more to buy than a comparable steel body, because both the material and the fabrication are more expensive. Whether it pays back depends on how much extra payload the truck carries, how many trips it makes and how long it stays in service.

How to decide

  1. How close do you run to the weight limit? If trucks often leave full, aluminum's lower weight turns directly into payload.
  2. How is the body loaded? Heavy machines, crane loading and abrasive cargo point to steel.
  3. Where does the truck work? Consider the climate, road salt and how far the nearest repair shop is.
  4. How long will you keep it? Compare total cost over the service life, not only the purchase price.
  5. Which body type? Dump bodies are usually built in steel. Stake and van bodies are the most common candidates for aluminum.

What to send for a quotation

Tell us the target vehicle model, body type, dimensions, payload, preferred material or the weight you need to reach, quantity and destination market. We can build by drawing, by sample or to a target specification, and our engineers review the structure before quoting. Read how to choose a truck cargo body and how truck cargo bodies are made.

About Hailong Group

Hailong Group was founded in 1955 and is certified to IATF 16949, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Truck body production is based in the group's Bei'an Intelligent Manufacturing Park, with a capacity of about 30,000 cargo body sets a year.
